Description:

This 5-hour presentation is an advanced level course for SLPs on how oral structure and oral function impact articulation, language, voice, swallowing, feeding, cognition, sleep, and general health. Traditional thinking about oral motor will be compared to current understanding of skeletal muscle motor learning and neuroplasticity. Special considerations will be made for treating OMDs in the school setting.

Course Objectives: As a result of this activity, the participants will be able to:

  • Explain why American SLPs do not address cranial dysmorphology and oral dysfunction.
  • Identify areas of oral function and dysfunction that contribute to articulation of sounds.
  • Describe how oral motor function impacts language acquisition and its connection to academics.
  • Provide diagnosis, treatment, and referrals in the school setting.

Linda D’Onofrio, MS, CCC-SLP completed her degree in Communication Disorders at the University of Oregon, her medical externship at the Oregon Health Sciences University Medical Center, and her clinical fellowship at the Oregon VA Medical Center. She has worked as an adjunct instructor, teaching graduate courses in craniofacial disorders and oromyofunctional disorders. She has reviewed manuscripts for the Journal of Clinical Pediatric Dentistry, Folia Phoniatrica et Logopaedica, and the Journal of Oral Rehabilitation. Her paper “Oral dysfunction as a cause of malocclusion” in the journal Orthodontics & Craniofacial Research was awarded the most downloaded article for the journal in 2019 and 2020. She has lectured on oral physiology at universities worldwide, including at Stanford, Tufts, and the Vienna School for Interdisciplinary Dentistry.
